Required Supplies: A Specific Supply Kit for this workshop available on Upcycle Stitches Website.
Optional Supplies: Masking Tape and/or Bandage to protect the nail from scratching by needles.
Prep Requirements: No prep for materials are needed. However, it is a good idea to cut the nail on the dominant hand (the hand with the needle). One can learn Sashiko with long nails, but it may be an obstacle in the first trial.
While we can find many resources for Sashiko, Atsushi finds that the Sashiko introduced in English is unfortunately simplified. In this workshop, Atsushi introduces the most important element in Sashiko - Unshin. Students will learn the Form (Kata) to get on the stitching rhythm while breaking down into the details of Unshin. While practicing, Atsushi shares the stories about Sashiko to enrich the understanding of what Sashiko is for Japanese. The object of this workshop is to learn the form of Unshin for Sashiko so that stitchers can apply the idea of the Japanese mindset in stitching. Proper understanding of Unshin will enable them to make even (small) stitches with faster speed. It is important to learn how to "not" to focus on stitching & outcome. Atsushi will keep motivating & encouraging the participants in learning something very unique & new. This will be an eye-opening experience for many hand-stitching practitioners. All levels welcome!
