In the middle of working on this quilt, Hurricane Helene struck the United States, devastating the region where I live, Western North Carolina. For me, memories of the destruction to our beautiful mountains and the trauma of the event are stitched into this quilt. When I look at it I'll remember not only what we've suffered, but how we have persevered and shown the world the strength of the people of WNC.
