IMP011 - Chaos with a Twist: Generative Kaleidoscope Quilt
Saturday, February 22, 2025
1:30 PM – 9:00 PM MT
NOTE: Materials fees are required for some workshops. These fees are paid directly to faculty and are not part of your registration fee. Seats Available?: Sold Out
Required Supplies: - 8 - 12 fabrics in fat quarters to ½ yards. Choose a variety of prints/solids that you love and would like to see together in a quilt. For fabric inspiration, look up #embracethechaosquilt (or even #rebelquilt) on Instagram - these quilts don't have a kaleidoscope layout but are similar in style to what we are doing in class. - Coloured pencils or markers – we’ll use these to color our quilt designs so each colored pencil will represent one of your chosen fabrics - Pencil & eraser - Small drafting ruler - Straight pins - Thread for piecing - neutral thread will be provided - Stitch ripper
The below items will be provided in the workshop room to share amongst students but it is highly recommended students bring their own to maximize class time: -- Small Personal Cutting Mat -- Rotary cutter -- Quilting ruler - Unfinished block sizes are 8-1/2" so bring a ruler that makes it easiest to cut up to this size (or use provided rulers in the classroom) -- Scissors
Optional Supplies: Favourite ruler for trimming smaller HST units to 4-1/2" (e.g. Bloc Loc or Clearly Perfect Slotted Trimmers)
Prep Requirements: No advance prep required except for fabric selection.
Playing with a library of quilt block patterns and gaming tools for randomization, like dice and bingo chips, Libs will guide you through her unique generative process for designing a mirrored kaleidoscope quilt that begins with chance and ends with vast possibilities. There is a balance in this workshop between letting go of control and then reigning it in. By using controlled elements in a random way, each participant will draft and sew their own unique quilt top. All along the way, you will play with design variations, assess visual flow, learn to choose fabrics that create contrast and movement and hone your block construction skills. Sewing machines generously provided by event sponsors!
