If you've been wanting to explore ways of making quilts that seem to be outside the 'Modern' definition, you're not alone. The Modern Quilt definition can be a challenge to navigate at times, but there are artists making quilts that are absolutely Modern, and push the boundaries of what a Modern quilt is! This lecture will explore methods of making as well as artistic influences that are not often seen in the Modern quilt world, and will offer exciting possibilities for expanding the definition of what a Modern quilt can be. Methods of working and examples of artists who incorporate reused materials, non-traditional fabrics, narrative quilts, activist quilts, and artists who incorporate different traditional art mediums (ie. paint, print making) will be discussed and explored. Attendees will come away with a whole lot of inspiration for ways to explore pushing their own boundaries in their quilt making, an understanding of why it's good to push the boundaries in their quilt making, and an understanding of the importance of continuing to expand the Modern Quilt movement!
