Required Supplies: - Four cotton fabrics: a dark neutral, a light neutral, a bright color, and a dark color. An example palette would be white (or cream), black (or charcoal grey), hot pink, and maroon. Make sure the two neutrals read clearly as very light and very dark, and the two colors are related, but one is bright and one is dark. Solids or very subtly textured fabrics work best: if there is a texture, it should be extremely low-volume/low-contrast and appear to be a solid when viewed from a short distance. --- Dark Neutral: 1.5 yards --- Light Neutral: 0.5 yard --- Bright Color: 0.5 yard --- Dark Color: 0.5 yard - Cotton batting: one 30" x 24" piece cut into six 10" x 12" pieces - Cotton backing: one 31.5" x 25" piece cut into six 10.5" x 12.5" pieces from the dark neutral fabric ****If you do not wish to make all 6 example quilt sandwiches David asks that you please bring a minimum of 3 to class.*** - Four spools of 50 wt. sewing thread: white (or cream), medium grey, black, and one bright color that matches your bright colored fabric. Cotton thread like Aurifil is great, Sulky rayon is a nice option for the bright color. TOOLS: - Small snips to clip threads - Seam ripper - Hera marker (or large paperclip, which can be used as a hera marker) - Straight pins - The below items will be provided in the workshop room to share amongst students but it is highly recommended students bring their own to maximize class time: --- Rotary cutter --- Small cutting mat --- Small quilting ruler
Optional Supplies: Optional: #8 perle cotton thread in a bright color to match your bright fabric, and an embroidery needle.
Prep Requirements: You will receive a PDF handout with patterns and directions for preparing 3-6 simple quilt sandwiches, which you will need to piece and prepare in advance of the workshop. These will be the canvases for your machine quilting artistry!
Break free from traditional machine quilting using your walking foot and a domestic machine. Leave behind previous notions of stitching in the ditch or overall quilting. Approach machine quilting in an improv style, with a little planning! Students will prepare in advance three small quilt sandwiches from provided abstract designs: these will be the canvases for your machine quilting artistry. In this workshop, students will learn about overlaying quilting motifs, using different thread color with new positioning and multiple designs, and allowing the motifs to overlap. David will also discuss how to ramp up the texture with some big stitch hand quilting as well as how to gusset join your workshop samples into a finished mini quilt! Sewing machines generously provided by event sponsors!
