DSMQ003 - Take your Free Motion Quilting to the Next Level
Friday, February 21, 2025
9:00 AM – 4:30 PM MT
NOTE: Materials fees are required for some workshops. These fees are paid directly to faculty and are not part of your registration fee. Seats Available?: Sold Out
Required Supplies: - Thread (please use thread for machine quilting – not “all purpose” thread). A color slightly lighter or slightly darker than your fat quarters should be fine – a little contrast is nice but a lot of contrast can be visually jarring for beginners. Christina recommends Aurifil or Wonderfil Konfetti. - Quilting gloves (Christina uses Fons and Porter quilting gloves) - Curved basting pins (or your preferred alternative, to use below when making quilt sandwiches) - Small scissors - shared scissors will be provided but you may wish to have your own to maximize class time - Temporary fabric marker or fabric pen or fabric pencil - Notebook and pen for sketching (the larger the better) - 3 fat quarters about 18” x 20”(solids are best for these exercises to enhance visibility) - 3 pieces of batting 20” x 24” each - 3 pieces of muslin or waste fabric 20” x 24” each
Optional Supplies: - Sometimes quilters need to sit up a little higher for comfortable free-motion quilting. Bring a firm cushion (or a folded up quilt!) to sit on if you would like this option. - Book: Free-Motion Combinations by Christina Cameli
Additional Supply URL: This is an intermediate class (beginner instruction is not provided). See freemotioncircle.com to brush up your skills if needed!
Prep Requirements: Before class, use the above fabric, batting, and muslin to make and baste three quilt sandwiches. For each, use a fat quarter on top, batting in the middle, muslin on the back. You can baste the way you prefer – I use curved basting pins, about 10-12 pins per sandwich.
This class is designed to take your free-motion quilting skills to the next level! Learn practical skills that advanced quilters use without realizing they're using them! From moving around the space to design placement, integrating these strategies will help quilters expand their confidence and ease with free-motion quilting. Students should have an understanding of free motion quilting basics as well as some experience with free-motion quilting before taking this class. Sewing machines generously provided by event sponsors!
