NOTE: Materials fees are required for some workshops. These fees are paid directly to faculty and are not part of your registration fee. Materials Fee: $10 Fee Details: preprinted fabric panel for free-motion quilting exercises Seats Available?: Sold Out
Required Supplies: - Thread – a light colored thread is recommended (think light grey, beige, pink, etc). Use a thread that is meant for machine quilting, not ‘all purpose’ thread, Christina recommends Aurifil or Wonderfil Konfetti. - Quilting gloves if you use them (Christina recommends Fons and Porter quilting gloves) - Small scissors - shared scissors will be provided but you may wish to have your own to maximize class time - Temporary fabric marker or fabric pen or fabric pencil - Notebook and pen for sketching (for notebooks, the larger the better) - Class fee ($10): Christina will accept cash and credit card - 2 fat quarters (solids are best for these exercises to enhance visibility) - 2 pieces of batting 20” x 24” each - 2 pieces of muslin or waste fabric (for backing) 20” x 24” each
Optional Supplies: Sometimes quilters need to sit up a little higher for comfortable free-motion quilting. I recommend bringing a firm cushion (or a folded up quilt!) to sit on because quilting height often impacts smoothness while stitching.
Additional Supply URL: This is an intermediate class (beginner instruction is not provided) See freemotioncircle.com to brush up your skills if needed!
Prep Requirements: Before class, please make one fat quarter sandwich (just one!) with a fat quarter on top, the muslin on the back and the batting in between. (If you are running behind you may baste in class with pins, but no spray basting in class or in the hall, please.)
This workshop will focus on two challenges that frequently evade free-motion quilters: producing smooth lines and getting an even stitch length. Christina will help you build positive habits and muscle memory using preprinted panels. With this workshop, you can get back to the quilting you like to do - only better! Simple exercises help you notice and make small adjustments to hands, focus, speed, and intention to get the results you want. Students should have an understanding of free motion quilting basics as well as some experience with free-motion quilting before taking this class. Sewing machines generously provided by event sponsors!
