Required Supplies: - Woven top or blazer: One that can open fully in the front will be easier to maneuver and access while hand-stitching. A thick denim will be more difficult to hand-stitch through. Diana recommends a garment that is constructed of lighter fabrics. - Fabric scraps: Bring enough to cover the area of at least a fat quarter (18” x 22”). These will be applied to your garment, so choose them according to your personal aesthetic. At least 5 different colors/patterns. - Minimum 5’’ x 7’’ piece of muslin: We will layer practice fabric scraps on this piece and practice hand-stitching before applying what you learned to your garment. - Practice fabric scraps: Bring enough to cover a 5’’ x 7’’ area. These will be applied to the muslin for practice. - 11” x 14” flexible cutting mat: We will cut this into smaller pieces. (Example Here) - Size 2 Crewel Needles - #10 weight white cotton crochet thread: Diana recommends bringing at least 50 yards. It is typically sold in 350 - 800 yard increments. Most common brand is Aunt Lydia’s. - (3) silicone needle pullers to fit on your thumb, pointer finger and middle finger. These are not rubber thimbles. - Scissors: For cutting the scraps into different sizes and shapes. TSA allows scissors with a blade length of 4” or less in your carry-on. Shared scissors will be provided but you may wish to have your own to maximize class time. - Seam Ripper - Lots of straight pins with a ball end: Pins with a flat head tend to catch the thread more as we’re hand-stitching. - Fabric marking pen or pencil: Bring a marking pen or pencil color that you can see well on the scraps that you are bringing. Diana personally uses the Clover Chaco Liner in White for dark fabrics and a Frixion pen for lighter fabrics. - Clear Quilter’s ruler approximately 9-12” in length and no more than 2-3” wide.
Optional Supplies: - Clover Embroidery Needle Threader: If you think you may have difficulty threading the needle, this item will help you. It is different from a regular needle threader due to the orientation of the threading head.
Diana’s Patchwork Sashiko Method is a unique mash-up of different slow stitching and patchwork techniques. In this class, students will use their own scraps to learn the method of laying out the patchwork and applying the hand-stitching for practice. Then, students will use what they have learned and move on to embellishing their own woven garment with favorite scraps of all shapes and sizes. Add some hand-stitching on top and garments will be fully transformed! The top should be made of woven fabric (not knit) and will be easier to implement if the front is open or has buttons to open the front. Please note: the hand-stitching will be visible on the inside of the garment as well as the outside. Patchwork Sashiko Kits will be available to purchase as desired.
