NOTE: Materials fees are required for some workshops. These fees are paid directly to faculty and are not part of your registration fee. Seats Available?: Sold Out
Required Supplies: 4-8 fat quarters of fabrics you love in a range of values (light, midtone, dark)
Prep Requirements: Do you have any blocks, units, test pieces, or studies that you can’t let go of but don’t know what to do with them? Bring those! Think in terms of a unifying theme or color palette. Consider contrasts or complementary colors and shapes. Make a sketch of what you would like to work on or bring a WIP. If working with HSTs, make enough before class so that you have options to play around with during class. Same goes if you’re planning to work with strips or any block motifs like log cabins/stars/etc. The focus of this class will be exploring composition and using the elements of design to create a cohesive and dynamic piece.
Who says you can’t have it all? In this dynamic class, students will explore Maximalist piecing. Create compositions that are bombastic but structured, chaotic but ordered. Maritza will discuss the use of color, the elements of design, and how to employ different piecing techniques in order to fulfill the vision of “more is more.” The class will begin with a brief slideshow lecture showcasing quilts that successfully brought it all on, and we will then jump into fast paced rounds of sewing. Students are encourage to bring blocks or WIPs that you have put in the “time out” pile or sewn units, like HSTs or HRTs, in addition to your fabric so that we can get the most of our time together. Sewing machines generously provided by event sponsors!
