Required Supplies: - 4-7 of the blocks covered in the prep work section - Fabric scraps left over from the construction of the above blocks - Maritza suggests starting with 8 fat quarters or 4 half yard cuts, use these to make your prep work blocks and then bring any leftover fabric with you to class. - Any additional fabric you would like to incorporate.
Prep Requirements: Choose one (or more) of the three following blocks/motifs: • log cabin • 9-patch • 8 point star The focus of the class will be on how use these motifs in a fresh way, bearing in mind the elements of design and what makes a quilt “modern.” You will want to make several blocks to use in class. As you make these, consider a color palette. Also consider contrast and scale. Do you want to play with contrast and value? Do you want to explore how scale can impact the design? Anywhere between 4-7 blocks would make a great starting point.
Traditional blocks and motifs can be the basis for dynamic improv piecing and exciting modern quilt design. In this class, students will take a traditional block or motif - limiting ourselves to one of the following motifs in the interest of narrowing our focus: log cabin, 9-patch, or 8 point star - and use it as the basis for an improv piece. Improv is a lot like a game of choose your own adventure. You establish your parameters using your motif, your palette, and size considerations, and make decisions. This class will help you overcome the fear of decision making and guide you through the process with efficient piecing techniques, color expertise, and design knowledge.
