IMP012 - Off the Beaten Path Piecing with Improv Mountains
Saturday, February 22, 2025
1:30 PM – 9:00 PM MT
NOTE: Materials fees are required for some workshops. These fees are paid directly to faculty and are not part of your registration fee. Seats Available?: Sold Out
Required Supplies: - Gradient of 3 sunset colors of fabric, at least 1/4 yard cut of each. Note that the width is important here, since our finished piece will be much narrower than it begins, and we want to fit mountains in there! Kitty recommends working with solid fabrics for this, and will have kits available for purchase nearer to QuiltCon for those of you who want help with the color flow fabric selection step! If you want to simplify and choose a single background/sky fabric, bring one (1) 12” x 24+” rectangle. Kitty encourages you to play with smooth color gradients that reflect your favorite sunrise, sunset, or delightful sky. These can be different values of the same color (ie a light, medium, and dark blue), or can be a natural progression of colors seen in sunsets (ie pink, orange, peach). Use nature as your color palette inspiration! Reach out with any questions along the way!
- Contrasting gradient of two (2) mountain colors of fabric, 1/2 yard each. A darker and lighter tone of the same color works well for the mountains. For example a dark purple and a lighter purple, or a dark blue and a lighter blue. The lighter color gives the impression of distance, the furthest mountains a bit hazy back beyond the foreground.
- White fabric for highlights, 1/4 yard. (You will not use all of this, and could use scrap strips of white fabric, but having a larger cut makes the process easier when learning.)
- Rotary cutter, small mat, and quilting ruler with a 1/4” measure. If you have a small mat to put next to your machine, that will save time during the workshop! Shared supplies will also be provided if you can not travel with these items.
- Seam ripper - (we’ll hope we don't need it, but when learning, it’s always good to have a BFF seam ripper handy!)
- Pins
Optional Supplies: Notebook and writing implement to map out a plan for the order of operations, and take notes
Set off fearlessly with Kitty as she teaches you how to piece an improv mountain range wall hanging, full of adventurous skill building. In sewing the unique and nestled mountains, you will learn how to piece gentle improv curves, precise thin strips, and how to think through the order of operations when piecing more complex blocks. Kitty will demonstrate how to put partial seams to use, and where some pre-planning can set you up for success with off the beaten path designs. Playing with both color gradients and creative piecing methods, students will leave with more confidence to dive into improvisationally pieced quilt construction, ready to head off the grid and embrace the adventure! Sewing machines generously provided by event sponsors!
