The father of a close friend, a quiet, unassuming man, used to be a Smokejumper. As a Brit, the concept of smokejumping was totally new to me. To parachute directly into danger when everyone else is instructed to flee, to battle raging wildfires that are consuming everything in their path - that to me is the true definition of heroic. This quilt honours his work and that of all smokejumpers, their bravery and selflessness, their legacy.
